WYO-131 Gravel Race: Be Our 2026 Race Director!

Are you ready to make gravel magic happen in Lander, Wyoming?

The Lander Cycling Club is on the lookout for a passionate, community-minded, get-things-done kind of person to lead the charge as Race Director for the 2026 WYO-131. This is your chance to shape one of Wyoming’s most beloved gravel cycling events — and yes, you’ll get to shadow the 2025 Race Director to learn the ropes and get fully prepped for your big debut.

About the WYO-131

The WYO-131 Gravel Grinder is more than a race — it’s a celebration of cycling, community, and the wild, wide-open beauty of Fremont County. Held annually on the second weekend of September, this two-day event features multiple supported rides with scenic routes, well-stocked aid stations, and a community-fueled afterparty in Lander’s City Park.

With around 400 riders each year and growing, WYO-131 is designed to deliver a high-quality race experience that strengthens the regional cycling community and supports the mission of the Lander Cycling Club — to bring people together, encourage recreational and economic growth, and spread the joy of riding bikes.

The Role: Race Director (2026)

Start: Assistant Director in 2025 → Full Director in 2026

As the Event Director, you’ll take the lead on everything from vision to execution, with support from the Club and community. This role isn’t just about organizing a bike race, it’s about shaping a meaningful, inclusive, and sustainable event that keeps riders and volunteers coming back year after year.

Here’s what you’ll take on:

Event Planning & Execution

  • Kick off planning 10 months out.

  • Oversee all logistics: routes, permits, aid stations, vendors, and volunteer coordination.

  • Ensure the event is safe, smooth, and professionally run.

  • Manage race-day ops and throw a killer afterparty.

Community-Focused Vibes

  • Keep the event inclusive, fun, and community-first.

  • Collaborate equally with Gannett Peak Sports and The Bike Mill on planning and promotions.

  • Build strong ties with local businesses and volunteers.

Financial Oversight

  • Work within a budget and make sure the event pays for itself.

  • Seek out sponsors, fundraising opportunities, and grants.

Marketing & Promotion

  • Promote the event like a pro! Social media, postcards, posters, press, radio, local pubs — go big!

  • Coordinate with local outlets like County 10, Lander Journal, and more.

  • Develop and distribute materials like the race booklet, welcome packets, and event swag.

Reporting & Feedback

  • Gather participant feedback via post-event survey.

  • Submit a post-race report to the Board

  • File reports to TAD, FS, and BLM after the event.

Master To-Do List Includes...

  • Updating the website, tracking expenses, reserving City Park, organizing volunteers, managing sponsor relations, booking bands/food trucks, securing timing gear, working with SAR/Wilderness support, sourcing swag, final emails, and post-race thank-yous… and more.

What You Get

  • $1,000 stipend in 2025 while you shadow and learn.

  • A new pay rate negotiated when you become the full Race Director in 2026.

  • A two-year commitment: one year as apprentice, one year as director (and potentially beyond).

  • Tons of community support, mentoring, and momentum behind you.

Who You Are

You’re a creative, organized, bike-loving leader who:

  • Thrives on collaboration.

  • Can handle details and big-picture planning.

  • Cares about community as much as competition.

  • Isn’t afraid of spreadsheets, group texts, or 4 a.m. wake-up call on race day

  • Wants to make a difference while having a great time doing it.

  • Local. Sorry this is not a remote position. You must be based in Fremont County
