WYO131

In our opinion, this is the best gravel course ever created. This rugged course is well known for pushing riders to their limit while carrying them on a journey across a diverse array of Wyoming ecosystems — from the sage brush seas surrounding the Red Desert to the subalpine lakes of the Wind River Range.

This is not a ride for beginners. There will be pain and suffering. There will be rough roads. There will be cut off times. Some people will not finish. You’ll need hard-core gravel and endurance experience before taking on this route. There are several crew accessible bail-points and a shuttle.

Race it, ride it, or tour it.

If there’s going to be pavement, it may as well be on a wicked fast descent on the last 10 miles of course.

Course Description

The start is at Lander City Park at 405 Fremont St.

Begin by riding Hwy 131 towards Sinks Canyon to Mortimer Lane. From Mortimer, we will briefly head south on Hwy 287 before turning left onto Lyons Valley Road.  Enjoy the last of the tarmac, until we turn right onto the gravel at Coal Mine Road and follow it all the way to Hudson, WY.  Just out of town you’ll hit Aid Station 1.  This aid station will have water, drink mix and a few snacks.

Continue on to the next fully stocked Aid Station #2 at mile 36.5 (9 Mile Reservoir). Crew members are NOT ALLOWED to meet riders at this aid station. This is to avoid traffic passing the racers. Please allow our aid station to provide your riders with snacks and hydration.

Next is the gravel Hudson-Atlantic City Road, BLM #2302.  You will gradually climb through the Sweetwater Hills/Sand Draw region to Beaver Rim, where you will climb quite steeply. At the top look back at the amazing view before you head West on gently rolling terrain.

Cross the highway and continue on the Hudson-Atlantic City gravel road.  Immediately across the hwy is Aid Station #3 at mile 60. Crew members may meet you at this location. This is a possible bail-point if you need it. This is traditionally a rough patch of road. Extremely wash boarded and winds usually pick up. Keep your head down and just knock this section out, its about to get really good. This road will curve west then northwest, and take you to the Atlantic City Grubsteak which is Aid Station #4 at Mile 90. Take some time to appreciate this historic old gold mining town, then slather on the chamois butter, grab a burger, and push on! This is your last opportunity to bail and hitch a ride on the Wind River Shuttle, but we’d suggest taking a long rest and sticking to it. We really love the next part of the course.

Head northwest towards Hwy 28 and briefly ride northeast on the highway. Turn left (north) onto the gravel Louis Lake Road (in the parking lot), which you'll follow into the Wind River Mountains.  Aid Station #5 at Mile 103 will be at the Louis Lake Lodge just after a fast, mile long descent and crossing the bridge over Louis Creek. Crew members are NOT ALLOWED to meet riders at this aid station. This is to reduce as much traffic as possible on this narrow road.

Continue uphill, enjoying the beautiful views into the Wind River Range as you question your decision to enter this race in the first place. You'll reach the high point of 9,576 ft at mile 109 and begin an amazing 22 mile decent back to Lander. At mile 116, ride onto pavement and descend the switchbacks into Sinks Canyon, then follow the Highway 131 all the way back to the finish at Lander City Park.

There will be beer and food waiting for you. Congrats you did it!
